Agra

Recommended stay: 1–2 days

The Taj Mahal seen through a carved red sandstone archway, with visitors on the courtyard

A former Mughal capital, Agra is built around one of the most recognised monuments in the world — the Taj Mahal, completed in 1653 by Emperor Shah Jahan as a mausoleum for his wife Mumtaz Mahal.

Beyond the Taj, the city's Mughal-era fort and the nearby abandoned capital at Fatehpur Sikri form a dense, largely walkable heritage circuit that can realistically be covered in a day or two.

How to reach Agra

Agra has its own airport with limited flights, and is well connected by high-speed rail from Delhi (~2 hours via the Gatimaan Express).

Places to visit

Taj Mahal

A white marble mausoleum built between 1632–1653, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Agra Fort

A red sandstone Mughal fort overlooking the Yamuna River, the main imperial residence until 1638.

Fatehpur Sikri

A well-preserved Mughal city built by Akbar in the 1570s, abandoned soon after due to water shortages.

Mehtab Bagh

A garden across the river from the Taj Mahal, offering an unobstructed view, especially at sunset.

Itmad-ud-Daulah's Tomb

Sometimes called the "Baby Taj", an ornate marble tomb that influenced the Taj Mahal's design.
