Ladakh · Trans-Himalaya
A former trading post on the old Silk Route, Leh sits at roughly 3,500m in the trans-Himalayan region of Ladakh. Most visitors plan a day or two of acclimatization on arrival before heading further, given the altitude.
It's the natural base for exploring Ladakh's high-altitude lakes, centuries-old monasteries, and mountain passes — several of the region's best-known sights are a half-day's drive or more from town, so a longer stay pays off here more than almost anywhere else on this list.
A 17th-century royal palace overlooking the town, modelled on the Potala Palace in Lhasa.
A high-altitude lake stretching into Tibet, known for its changing colours and clear water.
A large 12-storey monastery resembling the Potala Palace, with a large seated Buddha statue.
A valley reached via the high Khardung La pass, known for sand dunes and Bactrian camels.
A white-domed Buddhist stupa built in 1991, offering panoramic views over Leh.
