Himachal Pradesh · Kullu Valley
Manali sits at the northern end of the Kullu Valley and has long served as the last major town before the high mountain passes into Lahaul-Spiti and Ladakh. Its name is linked to the sage Manu, said to have recreated human life here after a great flood.
Today it's one of North India's most popular bases for trekking, adventure sports, and mountain road trips, with a genuine split in character between the busier main town and the quieter, café-filled lanes of Old Manali across the river.
An adventure sports hub for paragliding, winter skiing, and zorbing, about 14km from town.
A wooden cave temple in a cedar forest, built in 1553, dedicated to a figure from the Mahabharata.
A quieter, café-lined neighbourhood across the river, popular with long-stay travellers.
A high mountain pass over 3,900m connecting the Kullu Valley to Lahaul-Spiti, permit and season dependent.
A forest reserve and nature park along the Beas River, an easy walk from the town centre.
